In other words, discipline teaches a child to follow rules. Discipline may involve both punishment and, more importantly, rewards. It sounds so straightforward, yet every parent becomes frustrated at one time or another with issues surrounding children and discipline.
It is important that you do not put your overweight child(ren) on a restrictive diet Children should never be placed on a restrictive diet to lose weight unless a doctor or paediatric dietician supervises one for medical reasons.
Other approaches parents can take to develop healthy eating habits in their children include:

Guide your family's choices rather than dictate foods. Make a wide variety of healthy foods available in the house. This will help your children learn how to make healthy food choices.

Encourage your children to eat slowly. A child can detect hunger and fullness better when eating slowly.

Eat meals together as a family as often as possible. Try to make mealtimes pleasant with conversation and sharing, not a time for scolding or arguing. If mealtimes are unpleasant, children may try to eat faster to leave the table as soon as possible. They then may learn to associate eating with stress.

Involve your children in food shopping and preparing meals. These activities will give you hints about your children's food preferences, an opportunity to teach your children about nutrition, and provide your children with a feeling of achievement. In addition, children may be more willing to eat or try foods they have helped prepare.

Plan for snacks. Continuous snacking may lead to overeating, but snacks that are planned at specific times during the day can be part of a nutritious diet, without spoiling a child's appetite at meal times. You should make snacks as nutritious as possible, without depriving your children of occasional crisps or biscuits, especially at parties or other social events.

Discourage eating meals or snacks while watching TV. Try to eat only in designated areas of your home, such as the dining room or kitchen. Eating in front of the TV may make it difficult to pay attention to feelings of fullness, and may lead to overeating.

Colon Hydrotherapy - Gentle, Relaxing, Cleansing

Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle internal bath that cleanses the colon. If that sounds like you, you'll want to listen to this program because I give you some safe, natural tips for easing that GI pain.

“American MediterAsian Diet” Cooking Show
Guido Cantilope will be up on the program a little later, he's our in house Mediterranean and he'll be sharing a favorite Italian recipe.... Pasta Fagioli. Guido is part of our new format here on the other side of medicine... he's part of the “American MediterAsian” cooking show that will feature each week here on the program, every Saturday we’ll be cooking up some great tasting foods...based on the diet found in my Carbs from Heaven Carbs from Hell book. I call it the “American MediterAsian Diet” because it's a fusion of Latin American, Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. Chef Guido is our in house Mediterranean expert, Chef Why Yu Munching is our Asian expert, and were still looking for our Latin American master chef, so stay tuned for the mystery chef from south of the border.

Click here to listen to the cooking show clip: Guido Cantilope (Note: The Happy Chicken Egg Farm is a fictitious sponsor)
Click here for the recipe: Pasta Fagioli

Are Toxins Keeping You Fat?
And if you've been trying to do everything under the sun to lose weight, you’re eating all the right things, exercising, eating when you’re happy and not stressed out, but despite all of these things the weight just won't come off, you might just find the answer you've been looking for today. It could be in the foods you’re eating that have preservatives in them, or maybe in the non-organic vegetables you’re eating that are grown on commercial farms where they use a lot of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. I talk about the latest research that links toxins in our air, food and water supply and how they affect your health and weight.

Read the full scientific report here: http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/newscience/long-term-atrazine-exposure-may-lead-to-fat-rats/

Dr. Krystosik's conclusion:
Everyone one of us are exposed to low levels of environmental poisons, herbicides, pesticides, preservatives, food additives, household chemicals, industrial waste, etc. Alternative physicians like myself have been talking about the hazards of low levels of environmental poisons for many years. Research studies like this one will hopefully open the eyes of Americans to realize that in order to protect your health you must take an active role in your health care. “The Other Side of Medicine” keeps you posted on the latest breakthroughs in health news like the article you just read and empowers you and your family to take charge of your health so you can live a lifetime of wellness.

Coming Up Next Week on “The Other Side of Medicine”: Blue Zones
Next week we’ll be talking about “Blue Zones,” pockets of people around world that live to be 100 years or more in extraordinary health. This nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID's), available both over the counter and by prescription, is commonly used to treat arthritis, menstrual symptoms, headache, general aches and pains, and various inflammatory conditions.

Although many people think that if their doctor prescribes anti-inflammatory medications that they must be safe. The truth is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are associated with an increased risk of heart and circulation problems, including stroke and heart attack, as well as gastrointestinal problems, such as bleeding or perforation of the stomach or intestinal tract. These risks increase the longer you take the drug, although the length of time until it affects any one individual varies depending on their overall health, use of other medications. This week on the “The Other Side of Medicine” we provided safe and effective alternatives for pain and inflammation.

Listen to the amusing spot we did this week on the side effects of anti-inflammatory medications. Doctor Dragnet - Mr. Ben Dover

However, keep in mind although we poked fun at these medications the side effects were taken right out of the pharmaceutical industries own literature.

1/16/10 - There's a Fresh New Sound to the "Other Side of Medicine"

The new and improved “Other Side of Medicine” is an oasis for baby boomers and beyond. Age is a funny thing, and here on the other side of medicine we like to poke fun at it. And our kids poke fun at us because of our age. Many of us have children, I have six, and we need to stay young just so we can keep one step ahead of our kids, or at least make them think were one step ahead of them. That's what I do. And if you’re smart, you'll take my advice and do the same. I've also discovered that baby boomer kids like to listen to the other side of medicine. That's because they get to hear all of the funny things we go through as we age. And they don't want to end up with all of the health problems that many baby boomers have. Like arthritis, and high blood pressure and heart disease, and diabetes, and “Boopitis.” “Boopitis” is all the other signs symptoms and diseases that most baby boomers believe they have to live with as they age. But when these folks here about the “Other Side of Medicine” they're ears perk and their eyes become a little brighter. That's because we reveal the secrets of staying young as you grow old. We show you how to age gracefully. In the following weeks we will be unveiling many new elements of entertainment and education blended into an unusual and engaging program. We hope you enjoy the fruits of our labors behind the scenes as we bring you the new “Other Side of Medicine.” We would like to ask a favor of you. If you enjoy the program please tell your friends about it and send them some of the links we will provide for you in the upcoming weeks.

Sincerely,
Dr. James D.
