Acid alkaline balance is one of the most important, if not the most important regulatory systems
in the body. If your body is to acid, or to alkaline you can have multiple health problems including chronic disease. Although alkalosis (pH is too alkaline) is a rare occurrence, acidosis is not. In fact a low grade acidosis is quite common here in the United States, and it is a silent killer. The standard American diet (S.A.D.), stress, toxins in the air water and food, medications and even exercise all increase the acid waste load inside the body.
When the amount of acid waste is greater than the body’s ability to eliminate it, illness emerges. The body has more than 70 trillion cells. Every organ of the body is made up of millions of cells. The skin, nerves, heart, lungs, liver brain and every other organ of the body is made up of a network of cells. A low grade acidosis weakens every one of the cells that make up these organs.
One of the ways a low grade acidosis weakens cells is by making cell membranes stiff and rigid. Every one of the trillions of cells in the body has an outside membrane. The cell membrane is like the skin on a grape, except the membrane of a cell is made up of oils. When the cell membrane becomes stiff and rigid, nutrients, including oxygen can’t get into the cells and waste matter can’t get out of the cells. Now the cell becomes tired and toxic and it cannot function properly. As cells weaken and die, organs begin to suffer. Consequently, when cells suffer so does the entire body. To make matters worse, the body’s defense system, the immune system becomes weaker.
The cells of the immune system suffer from a low grade acidosis in a couple different ways. First of all, if a low grade acidosis exists, the immune cells will not get sufficient amounts of nutrients, including oxygen. If low levels of oxygen exist in the intestinal tract, double trouble begins. First the beneficial aerobic bacteria (they thrive in oxygen) are deprived of adequate levels of oxygen. If an insufficient amount of oxygen is available, the healthy bacteria begin to die off. On the other hand the low levels of oxygen encourage the growth of harmful, anaerobic bacteria (they thrive in an oxygen poor environment), yeasts, viruses and even parasites. The result is the good bugs die off and the bad bugs multiply. Considering 60% of the immune system cells reside inside the intestinal tract, the health of the gut is an integral part of our immune system.
Excess acid waste also increases the production of free radicals, harmful molecules that damage cells. Free radicals are self generating and once they are ignited they multiply quickly. These harmful molecules act like a bowling ball in a china cabinet. Left out of control they cause mutations in cells leading to chronic disease including diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. The body tries to combat these free radicals with anti-oxidants. However, acid waste weakens the activity of anti-oxidants; consequently free radicals are left unchecked.
So what’s the answer? It’s obvious we need to make sure we don’t have an accumulation of acid waste. First of all the body has several sophisticated systems to buffer (neutralize) acid waste. The problem is that we have overwhelmed the body with too much acid waste and it can’t keep up with it. Consequently, the excess acid waste starts to deposit in the body and we end up with chronic disease. Did you ever see the “I Love Lucy” episode when she was working in a chocolate factory? Acid waste build up in the body is very much like the problem Lucy had working in the chocolate factory. Lucy was working on an assembly line in the chocolate factory, and as the candy came down the conveyer belt, Lucy calmly put the chocolates in boxes. As the speed of the assembly line increased Lucy finally became overwhelmed and she ended up stuffing the candy everywhere (down her blouse, in her pants, on the floor). Like Lucy, our bodies become overwhelmed. But instead of excess chocolate, are bodies are overwhelmed with acid waste. The body stores the excess acid waste in organs until they are over run with acid waste and we die. In order to correct the problem we need to help the body in its efforts to eliminate the acid waste.

Recipe of the Week pH Balanced Diet
Marinade for 4 Portobello Mushroom Caps
Zest and Juice of one Lemon
ABOUT
1 teaspoon (t) of Braggs Liquid Aminos or low sodium soy sauce
¼ Cup (C ) pure water
1 Bay Leaf
1 Sprig fresh Thyme or ½ teaspoon (t) of dried thyme
1/8 t Succanat sugar or stevia to taste
sea salt to taste (very little less than an ⅛ tsp)
½ teaspoon (t) fresh ground pepper
2 Tablespoon (T) rice vinegar
1Tablespoon (T) sesame oil
Bring ALL ingredients to a simmer EXCEPT the sesame oil
Simmer for 10 minutes Evaporating about 1 T to finish with about 1/3 cup marinade to incorporate flavors
Remove from heat let cool strain
Add Sesame oil while whisking pour over stem side on mushroom
About 1 T spoon each
Grill or broil till soft
Dr. Krystosik likes to place the mushrooms in a frying pan with about 5 Tablespoons of water. Place a lid on the pan and steam for about 5 minutes. Add more as needed.
Than add the marinade to each mushroom and cook with the lid off for about 2 minutes.

Many people think of allergies exclusively in terms of airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, and molds. IgG antibodies are the most common form of immunologic mediated food responses. It can be difficult to identify the offending food since we eat so many foods that go through different processes and have many ingredients. Unidentified food sensitivities can contribute to many chronic health conditions: including Irritable bowel syndrome, Rheumatoid arthritis, Weight Gain, Headaches, Autism, ADD/ADHD, Eczema, Chronic ear infections, Malabsorption, Insomnia, in all there are over 150 symptoms that are triggered by delayed food allergies.

The title certainly grabs the reader’s attention. I have been telling my radio listeners about the importance of proper pH balance for more than 15 years. Today acid alkaline balance is one of the hottest topics in the natural food world. More and more research is demonstrating the importance of maintaining the body in an alkaline state. If you recall from eight grade science, pH is the measurement of the acid alkaline condition of any substance. The pH scale is recorded from 0 to 14, with pure water being neutral. If a substance is measures below 7 it is considered an acid substance, if it measures above 7 it is considered alkaline.

A New Government Study Questions the Safety of Fluoride
The surprising results of a new government study on the effects of fluoride have many people turning away from the tap to get a drink of water. The government study found that the amount fluoride children are now getting is causing 2 out every 5 children to develop spotting on the teeth a condition a condition known as fluorosis.

A Healthy Diet and Lifestyle Can Reverse Genetic Defects

The study volunteers were also given additional soy, three grams of fish oil, 100 units of vitamin E, 200 milligrams of selenium and 2 grams of vitamin C daily. The researchers expected the participants in the study to lose weight, lower their blood pressure and gain other health benefits; however they were surprised to find that they also had a profound change in their genetic makeup.
In a short 3 months the researchers found that the participants in the study had a profound change in the expression of their genes. The study reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that the expression of disease preventing genes were "turned on" and the expression of the disease promoting genes were "turned off," including 48 that were turned on and 453 that were turned off. The genes that were affected included those involved in prostate and breast cancer. Ornish said. "The implications of our study are not limited to men with prostate cancer." "It's an exciting finding because so often people say, 'Oh, it's all in my genes, what can I do?' Well, it turns out you may be able to do a lot," Dr. Dean Ornish, the lead author of the study told reporters. "'In just three months, I can change hundreds of my genes simply by changing what I eat and how I live?' That's pretty exciting," Ornish said.
According to Dr. Ornish their research findings in this study were both surprising and encouraging. "I thought younger people with milder disease would show the most improvement, but neither age nor disease severity made as much difference as adherence," said Ornish.
So students what that means is that it’s never too late to modify your diet and lifestyle. You can make a big difference in the outcome of your health. Please don’t except a self fulfilling prophecy that you are going to acquire the same diseases your family has a history of contracting. This mouthwatering Mexican-style breakfast wrap is hearty, delicious and easy to make
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil
1 cup of soy “sausage” Lite Life
4 whole wheat or teff wraps (gluten free)
1 ½ ripe mangoes, cut into strips
1 ripe pear cut into strips
8 ounces of mango flavored coconut yogurt
cinnamon to taste
1. Heat the oil in a skillet over low heat. Crumble the sausage into the skillet, and sauté until brown.
2. Warm the tortillas in an unoiled skillet, and place on plates.
3. Place equal amounts of mango pear, and sausage on the warm tortillas. Top each with yogurt and sprinkle with cinnamon to taste. Fold the tortillas and serve.
New Research Links 66% of Attention Deficit Disorder to Food
ADD Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a medical condition (a disease) that affects an estimated 5 to 10% of the children here in the United States. That’s approximately 3 to six million children. But are these two conditions really a disease? Up until 1987 these two medical conditions were not even found in medical textbooks. Than in 1987 the American Psychiatric Association voted in both of these conditions as a disease. Yes I did say voted it into existence. Yet according to the National Institutes of Mental Health, "We do not have an independent, valid test for ADHD, and there is no data to indicate that ADHD is due to a brain malfunction."
On this week’s program we heard from Dr. Fred Baughman a neurologist specializing in child neurology. He is a well known and outspoken critic of the diagnosis of (ADHD) and considers it a fraud perpetrated by the psychiatric and pharmaceutical industries."This is one of the statements he shared with us, “We do not have an independent, valid test for ADHD, and there is no data to indicate that ADHD is due to a brain malfunction. We also heard from Dr. Peter Breggin M.D. and author of “Talking Back to Ritalin,” states, “Ritalin is not caused by a chemical imbalance, it causes them.” Dr. Edward C. Hamyln one of the founding members of the Royal College of General Practioners stated in 1978, “ADHD is a fraud intended on justifying children on a lifelong drug addiction.” The U.S. Surgeon General states “The etiology (cause) of ADHD is unknown.”
Yet most of the 7 million children today are diagnosed with ADHD and ADD and are put on medication, Ritalin or some variant of this addicting drug. However the truth is the majority of these children don’t need medication. They don’t need to be exposed to the toxic effects of these harmful medications. What they do need is more love and discipline in their homes, they need better nutrition, they need to get rid of the over processed foods that are tainted with food additives, preservatives and excess sugar. They need to be tested by their doctors for things like food sensitivity and lead toxicity. But of course most doctors won’t do that because it takes too much time and it’s much easier to write a prescription.
On this week’s program we talked about a new research study that was conducted in the Netherlands demonstrating the benefits of an allergy free diet for children with ADHD. According to an article published in the Lancet Medical Journal, ⅔ of all the children with ADHD in the research study benefited significantly from an allergy free diet. The children ages ranged from four to eight years old and according to the researchers, Pelsser says, the children won't need medication. "The children responding favorably to the diet do not meet the criteria for ADHD or ODD anymore. Consequently there is no need for medication."
The high response rate to the elimination of the offending foods is ''very surprising" to Eugene Arnold, MD, professor emeritus ofpsychiatry at Ohio State University's Nisonger Center, Columbus, who reviewed the study findings for WebMD.
Arnold says he is open to parents who want to try the ADHD diet, provided it is supervised by experts who can help the parents. Diet Soda May Increase Risk for Heart Attacks and Strokes
According to researchers who presented their results this past Thursday at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles, diet soda may increase your risk for strokes and heart attacks by up to 61%. The lead author Dr. Hannah Gardener, an epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, said “The increased likelihood of vascular events remained even after she and her colleagues accounted for risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.” The researchers pointed their fingers at diet drinks because they found no increased risk among people who drank regular soda. Still the Gardener said, he and his colleagues aren’t ready to tell consumers to skip diet sodas, because more studies need to be done before that happens.
Sounds to me like Dr. Gardener and his fellow researchers study is strong evidence for people not to consume the sugar free sodas. They surveyed 2,564 north Manhattan residents regarding their eating behaviors, exercise habits and cigarette and alcohol consumption. The participants were all given physical examinations that included blood pressure measurements along with blood tests for cholesterol and other factors that might affect the risk forstrokes and heart attacks.
My advice for you and your family members is to stay away from sugar free, diet or whatever kind of soda that is made with all the rest of the artificial ingredients. Instead try using naturally sparkling Pellegrino water or seltzer water with a twist of lemon or lime. You can also try using half 100% fruit juice and half sparkling water. In either case use them sparingly as a treat once or twice per week.
In any event students, don’t wait until researchers make their final judgment on diet sodas ten or fifteen years from now. By then tens of 1000’s of people could end up dying from heart attacks and strokes because of them. Remember students, researchers are still arguing whether vitamin C is good for you! You know better.

I gave her some suggestion to substitute for some of her favorite junk foods. Instead of eating white English muffins (remember students the whiter the bread the sooner your dead), she is now using 100% whole wheat English muffins. And instead of putting on cream cheese made from cow’s milk, Brittny is now using Tofutti cream cheese (non-hydrogenated variety). See the recipe to make this tofu cream cheese taste delectable. Brittny is still recovering from her fall on the ice, but her back is getting better even though she still has a little residual pain that raises its ugly head at night. But overall this girl is making great strides on her journey back to good health. Go Brittny!
The Cat Lady
This week we have a surprise guest, Susan Hiers, a woman who absolutely loves cats. Susan is a patient of mine and I discovered this amazing woman has a wealth of knowledge about cat health, specifically all natural health care for cats. Recipe of the Week
Nut Butter Smoothie
1 frozen banana (you can also use a unfrozen banana)
¼ cup of almond butter, cashew butter or natural peanut butter
¾ cup of soy, rice or almond milk (preferably vanilla)
1 cup of ice (optional) you can replace this with 1 small container of soy yogurt
1 tsp. of raw honey (you can omit the honey if you use the yogurt)
Put all the above ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth
2 ½ tablespoons succanat sugar or 2 tablespoons raw honey
1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries

Are a common problem in middle aged men and women. However, heel spurs can occur at any age. Heel spurs contrary to public opinion are not sharp and actually their are no spurs at all. Heel spurs are flat smooth and flat nonetheless they can cause significant pain and inflammation. The repeated wear and tear use of the area surrounding the spur can irritate ligaments, tendons and nerves which eventually causes pain and inflammation.
The conventional treatment of heel spurs is rest, stretching exercise, and anti-inflammatory medications including injections with cortisone. Sometimes heel spurs are surgically removed or the fascia is loosened during surgery. Of course their are side effects to most all of these procedures.
The natural approach to heel spurs is totally safe, much more effective and much less expensive. Hidden Food Allergies and Chronic Illness
If you or someone you love is suffering from a chronic health problem food allergies may be the underlying cause. Those who suffer with autoimmune diseases like, celiac, Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, eczema, psoriases, fibromyalgia, lupus, MS, and even heart disease may be the victims of hidden food allergies. Unfortunately most doctors are unaware of the connection between hidden food allergies and chronic illness.
Consequently many people who suffer with bloating, gas, indigestion, reflux and irritable bowel syndrome may never realize their condition is linked to the foods on their plate. 1 lbs. extra firm tofu, crumbled
2 potatoes diced
2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic minced
½ cup of onion chopped
½ cup of green pepper chopped
½ cup of mushrooms chopped
¾ tsp. of powdered thyme
1 tsp. carraway seeds
2 tablespoons Braggs Liquid Aminos
¼ tsp. tumeric
¼ to ½ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
your favorite salsa for a garnish
Freeze the block of tofu (than thaw)
drain water off by placing a heavy object on top of tofu
squeezing out the water
cube the potatoes (with skins) boil until lightly firm
Put in 1 tablespoon of olive oil and add garlic, saute 1 minute
add onions, saute until golen (about 3 minutes). Add pepper and potatoes, saute
about 3 to 5 minutes. Next add mushrooms and spices saute another2 minutes
In a seperate pan add the the tablespoon of olive oil and Braggs Aminos add the crumbled tofu and saute for about 3 minutes. Combine the sauted vegatables and the tofu, and saute another 3 minutes. Remove from the stove and add the crushed red pepper.
Are Fish Oils Safe for Children and You?
Fish oils are one of the most well researched nutritional supplements in the marketplace. Their are volumes of research papers that overwhelmingly prove the health benifits of Omega 3 fats that are found in fish oil. Research demonstrates that fish oils promote the health of the heart and circulation, memory and moods, skin and hair, diabetes, hormone balance, and a long list of other health benifits.
Many people think all fish oil supplements are created equal. First of all there has always been a concern over the prescence of mercury in fish oil. Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies that sell fish oils that have high levels of mercury in them. Recently PCB's (Polychlorinated Byphenels) are another contaminent found in many fish oil products that has raised a lot of debate about the safety of fish oil supplements.
PCB's were banned in the United States back in 1979 when they were used extensively in the manufacturing of plastics, rubber, paint and many other industrial applications. PCB's don't readily breakdown and they are still hanging around in our enviroment, including or waterways. Fish can be contaminated with PCB's, especially larger fish. Scientists have linked PCB's to reproductive system, the immune system, the endrocrine system, the nervous system and it's also been linked to cancer. The law requires fish oil supplement companies to warn consumers if the amount of PCB's in their supplements exceed the allowed levels. Research has shown that their is a wide discrepency between the amounts of PCB's found in different companies products. Some companies have more than others.
Something else that is usually not considered in selecting a fish oil is the expireatiton date. This issue is probably as important if not more important than the contaminents found in many fish oils on the market. If the expiration date on the bottle is marked 2 or 3 years, consumer beware! Fish oils and any oil goes rancid or spoils in a relatively short period of time. Taking rancid fish oil supplemtents can actually promote rather than prevent heart disease, blot clots, strokes and brain disease. Rancid fish oils release free radicals and rapidly oxidize and cause illness. Good quality fish oils also contain vitamin E with tocopherols. Refrigeration also allows the fish oils to last longer without going rancid. I suggest you test your fish oil capsules when you first open the bottle. Bite into one and it should taste mildly fishy. If it is a strong fishy smell, throw them away. Contaminents and rancid fish oils are a serious matter. The best fish oil supplements don't contain PCB's, mercury and other contaminents and are not rancid. There is no need to take a dose of PCB's with your fish oil supplements. That is why the fish oil supplements I prescribe my patients has a certificate of anylisis that assures them of a supplement that is free of contaminents.

(Australia)—A report to be released in the British Journal of Dermatology says a team of scientists in Australia have found that the sap from euphorbia peplus—or milkweed, a common weed—may help cure non-melanoma skin cancers. (Photo: Daily Mail) Patients used in the study had failed to respond to conventional treatment, including surgery. The initial results of the milkweed tests were "impressive." After only one month, 41 of the 48 cancers had completely gone.
"In all cases of successful treatment the skin was left with a good cosmetic appearance." But don't try it at home. Scientists say "exposure of the sap to mucous producing surfaces, such as the eyes, results in extreme inflammation and can lead to hospitalization." Also, the concentration of the active ingredients in the sap varies with high doses able to cause very severe and excessive inflammatory responses.

It's time for us to be parents. We are our children's first and primary teachers. While schools should cover the subjects of nutrition, biology and other sciences that will point them in the right direction, the only way to really teach them what to eat, when and how much is our job. Tips to Teach Your Kids to be Healthy
1. Get out and play with them
2. Give your children non-food rewards, (ie, hugs, play a game with them, a walk in the park, take them swimming, roller skating,etc.)
3. Set and example by not eating burgers, fries and all the rest of the junk food
4. Shop for healthy food together and make it a fun time
5. Prepare healthy food together and make it a family time. Kids crave quality time with their parents.
Snow Shoveling and Back Pain Were getting our fair share of cold weather and snow this year. Many people injure their backs while shoveling snow. Cold muscles are easily injured since they are tight and taut.Low back pain caused by shoveling snow is most often muscular pain. Bending and twisting while carrying large loads of snow can cause muscular pain especially if your not used to doing this task. Slips and falls on snow and ice can cause muscle pain, bruises, misaligned vertabrae and even fractures of the spine or extremities.
Stretching in a warm place before shoveling snow is a good idea. Dress warm and wear layered clothing to help keep your muscles warm as well as to cushion your tush from an unexpected fall. Wear boots with good traction on them. Don’t over exert yourself, take rests in between shoveling. Tribute to Jack Lalane, “Little Jack’s Corner”
This week on The Other Side of Medicine we dedicated our program to one of America’s fitness heroes, Jack Lalane. On January 23, at the young age of 96 the godfather of fitness, Jack Lalanne died and left behind a legend that will continue to inspire the current baby boomer generation. We have all been influenced by this pioneer of wellness. Although he put his name in the halls of fame for his amazing feats of fitness and physical activities, Jack Lalanne was a true pioneer of the wellness movement in America.
Lalanne was number one in many categories of wellness. At age 21 in 1936 he opened the first workout gymnasium in the country. He later developed of franchise of over 100 of these workout facilities. He owned the first health food store in the United States and was the first to have his own brand of nutritional supplements. He was also a pioneer in television fitness programs and in 1951 started the first one in the country, The “Jack Lalanne Televions Show.” For over 35 years he entertained and trained millions of Americans in “Trimnastics,” the exercise regimen he coined in 1951 on the San Francisco. Even the “jumping jack” was named after Lalanne.
Lalanne didn’t start off so fit and trim. As a teenager he was overweight, angry and riddled with migraines, digestive problems and more. However, after hearing a lecture by fitness legend Dr. Paul Braggs, Lalanne was inspired to completely change his diet and lifestyle. The rest is history.
At age 60, he swam from Alcatraz island to Fishermans Wharf in San Francisco, pulling a 1,000 pound-boat while shackled and handcuffed. At age 70, he swam one and half miles while towing 70 boats with 70 people in Long Beach Harbor.
“Jacks” free spirit and spontaneous wit made you feel good just listening to him. Well here on “The Other Side of Medicine,” we decided to allow the Jack Lalanne legend to live on. So every Saturday morning were going to have a segment of the program we call “Little Jack’s corner.” We think it’s a fitting name since the godfather of fitness was merely 5’ 6”. We look forward to sharing a little of Jack Lalanne's fitness words of wisdom each week on “The Other Side of Medicine. So students get ready to get fit during “Little Jack’s Corner.”

Brittny Shay “On the Road to Good Health”
Brittny Shay was living “on top of the town” in New Orleans, that was before Katrina devastated the city. Brittny was a news anchor on Clear Channel television and a radio broadcaster in Louisiana. She was at the top of her career when the bottom fell out and her life was turned upside down. Fortunately for Cleveland she landed on the shoreline of Lake Erie, a far cry from the Gulf Coast, but nonetheless a blessing for Cleveland. After battling a bout with cancer, she emerged with a new perspective on health and wellness, Brittny experienced a new lease on life. But than along with score of other residents of New Orleans, after Katrina Brittny was out of a job and along with it she lost her focus on health and wellness. Worse than that along with everything else the way she puts it “I lost my identity.”
But Brittny is an amazing woman with a resiliant spirit and she was ready to reclaim her health and her identity. Then we crossed paths. I was speaking at a Macedonia chamber of commerce meeting, and before I knew it Brittny was in front of me with an interest in my work in natural medicine. The short of the story is she decided to become a patient at The Other Side of Medicine Health Center. We thought it would be a good idea to share her journey back to health with our radio listeners. Now each week you can follow Brittny’s journey back to health and pick up some of the health tips I prescribe for her. Recipe of the Week
Herbed Scrambled Eggs
This classic Mediterranean dish found in Dr. Krystosik’s book “Carbs from Heaven, Carbs from Hell, will turn any breakfast time into a a festive ocassion. Serve with a fresh fruit platter and some whole grain toast.
Yields 2 servings
4 Large organic eggs
1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil
1 clove of minced garlic
¼ cup of french feta cheese (sheep)
1 cup of fresh spinach (optional)
2 tablespoons of minced fresh basil
black pepper
You probably won’t need any salt for this recipe since feta cheese is already salty.
Variation: You can use any kind of greens in place of the spinich ( kale, swiss chard etc.)
You can also add chopped hot or sweet peppers and or olives. Be creative. Enjoy
Be sure to use “Happy Chicken Eggs” which are simply organic eggs that you can pick up
at almost any supermarket these days.

Teach Your Kids Good Eating Habits Early, Before Its Too Late.
By teaching your children healthy eating habits you can keep them at a healthy weight. Also, the eating habits your children learn when they are young will help them maintain a healthy lifestyle when they are adults.
Child discipline tactics
Discipline is the process of teaching your child what type of behaviour is acceptable and what type is not acceptable. In other words, discipline teaches a child to follow rules. Discipline may involve both punishment and, more importantly, rewards. It sounds so straightforward, yet every parent becomes frustrated at one time or another with issues surrounding children and discipline.
It is important that you do not put your overweight child(ren) on a restrictive diet Children should never be placed on a restrictive diet to lose weight unless a doctor or paediatric dietician supervises one for medical reasons.
Other approaches parents can take to develop healthy eating habits in their children include:
Guide your family's choices rather than dictate foods. Make a wide variety of healthy foods available in the house. This will help your children learn how to make healthy food choices.
Encourage your children to eat slowly. A child can detect hunger and fullness better when eating slowly.
Eat meals together as a family as often as possible. Try to make mealtimes pleasant with conversation and sharing, not a time for scolding or arguing. If mealtimes are unpleasant, children may try to eat faster to leave the table as soon as possible. They then may learn to associate eating with stress.
Involve your children in food shopping and preparing meals. These activities will give you hints about your children's food preferences, an opportunity to teach your children about nutrition, and provide your children with a feeling of achievement. In addition, children may be more willing to eat or try foods they have helped prepare.
Plan for snacks. Continuous snacking may lead to overeating, but snacks that are planned at specific times during the day can be part of a nutritious diet, without spoiling a child's appetite at meal times. You should make snacks as nutritious as possible, without depriving your children of occasional crisps or biscuits, especially at parties or other social events.
Discourage eating meals or snacks while watching TV. Try to eat only in designated areas of your home, such as the dining room or kitchen. Eating in front of the TV may make it difficult to pay attention to feelings of fullness, and may lead to overeating.

1/16/10 - “Take two aspirin and call me in the morning?”
The saying used to be, “Take two aspirin and call me in the morning,” but many people turn to ibuprofen to relieve inflammation, pain and fever. This nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID's), available both over the counter and by prescription, is commonly used to treat arthritis, menstrual symptoms, headache, general aches and pains, and various inflammatory conditions.
Although many people think that if their doctor prescribes anti-inflammatory medications that they must be safe. The truth is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications are associated with an increased risk of heart and circulation problems, including stroke and heart attack, as well as gastrointestinal problems, such as bleeding or perforation of the stomach or intestinal tract. These risks increase the longer you take the drug, although the length of time until it affects any one individual varies depending on their overall health, use of other medications.
