9 Secrets of the Oldest and Healthiest People on the Planet
Happiness is one thing most, if not all, of us are seeking. After treating over
13,000 patients one of the most important things I’ve learned from my interaction with
patients is, “Health and Happiness” go together. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not
saying you can’t be happy if you are sick and tired. But it’s a whole lot easier to be happy
if you are healthy. Over the next 9 weeks, I will share the 9 Secrets of Health and
Happiness of the people who live in the “Blue Zones.” These pearls of wisdom are based
on the research Dan Buettner, his team of scientists and National Geographic in their
quest to find the healthiest people on the planet. In addition, I’ll add my own personal
experience visiting one of the “Blue Zones” in Nicoya, Costa Rica.
The first lesson to learn is none of the people in any of the “Blue Zones” try to be
healthy. They don’t have personal trainers, go to a gym to work-out or follow a
particular “diet.” They simply have a lifestyle from the cradle to the grave. Over the next
9 weeks or more I will share the 9 Secrets of Health and Happiness of the inhabitants of
the “Blue Zone.” More importantly, I will give you tips on how to create your own “Blue
Zone” lifestyle. You don’t have to pack your bags and move to one of the blue zones to
find health and happiness. You can do it right where you live, starting today.
Today’s take home “Blue Zone Secret #1.” Most people are surprised when I
don’t zoom in on which foods to eat to live healthy, long lives right out of the gate.
Here’s why I don’t. One of the most important things the longest-lived people in the
blue zones do is to belong to social circles that support healthy behaviors. For example,
Okinawans create “moais” (pronounced ma-wo-eyes), small groups of friends (around 5)
committed to support each other for life. In my clinical experience, being part of the
right “tribe,” or wellness buddies, is the most important facet of making healthy habits
stick for a lifetime. Researchers have concluded that good and bad lifestyle behaviors
are contagious. People of the blue zones lives are shaped by sharing healthy behaviors
within their “tribe.” You can too. Simply start or join a health conscious “tribe’ and you’ll
be sure to thrive in your own blue zone. Stay tuned in for the Secret #2!
Until next time
To your health!
